LFP batteries: what are they and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

The rise of the electric car has placed the spotlight on one of its most important components: the battery. Key factors such as range, price, safety and the useful life of the vehicle all depend on it. In this context, LFP batteries have gained prominence as an alternative that is increasingly used by manufacturers.

But what exactly are they? How are they different from other lithium batteries? And why do some electric cars use this technology? We explain it in a simple way.

What are LFP batteries?

LFP batteries are lithium-ion batteries whose full name is lithium iron phosphate, also known by its chemical formula, LiFePO₄. Unlike other batteries used in electric vehicles, they do not use materials such as cobalt or nickel, but a combination of lithium, iron and phosphate.

Although this is not a new technology, its use has expanded in recent years within the automotive sector. The reason is clear: they offer a good combination of safety, durability and controlled cost. That is why it is increasingly common to find cars with LFP batteries in urban models, entry-level vehicles or electric fleets.

Characteristics of LFP batteries

  • Greater thermal and chemical stability: they withstand high temperatures better and are less likely to catch fire.

  • Longer life cycle: they can withstand more charge and discharge cycles without losing capacity.
  • Lower energy density: they take up more space to offer the same range as other batteries.
  • Lower cost: as they do not use scarce materials such as cobalt or nickel, they are more affordable to manufacture.
  • Fast and stable charging: although they are not the fastest, they offer predictable and safe charging.

Differences between LFP batteries and traditional batteries

When talking about traditional batteries in electric cars, this usually refers to technologies such as NMC batteries, made from nickel, manganese and cobalt, or NCA batteries, made from nickel, cobalt and aluminium.

The main difference lies in their chemical composition. LFP batteries use iron and phosphate, while NMC and NCA batteries use materials with higher energy density. This allows the latter to offer more range in long-distance vehicles.

However, LFP batteries have important advantages and reduce dependence on materials whose extraction can have a greater environmental and social impact.

So, it is not a matter of one technology being better or worse in absolute terms. NMC or NCA batteries may be more suitable for high-performance vehicles or cars with greater range, while LFP batteries fit very well in cars designed for everyday use.

Advantages and disadvantages of LFP batteries

Among the main advantages of LFP batteries are their durability, safety and lower cost. They can exceed thousands of charging cycles with moderate degradation, which helps extend the useful life of the vehicle.

Their disadvantages are mainly related to range and cold-weather performance. As they have lower energy density, they may offer fewer kilometres per charge compared with other batteries.

Even so, for many drivers who make urban journeys, daily trips or medium-distance routes, these limitations are not usually a major problem.

Why do some electric cars prefer LFP batteries?

Many electric cars do not need to offer extremely long ranges to be useful. That is why some manufacturers choose LFP batteries for models designed for the city, carsharing, company fleets or delivery vehicles. Their long useful life and lower cost help make electric mobility more accessible.

If you are thinking of taking the plunge, at Astara you can try an electric car with an LFP battery without having to buy it. Thanks to our flexible renting solutions, you can drive with everything included and without commitments. Or, if you are looking to upgrade to a more efficient car, you can check out our car purchase options.

LFP batteries have earned an important place in the world of electric vehicles thanks to their durability, safety and low cost. They are not the perfect solution for everyone, but they are an excellent alternative for many users looking for sustainable mobility without complications.
