Sustainability Report 2023
Through our sustainable and accessible mobility services for all, we are determined to lead the sector's revolution towards a greener future.
This is how Astara can make the Dakar rally more sustainable
- Astara and the Astara Team face their second Dakar rally with the aim of being even more sustainable.
- The open mobility company will again measure and audit the carbon footprint of Laia Sanz, Carlos Checa, and Óscar Fuertes and their team in the Dakar 2023, including the so-called indirect emissions from personnel and materials.
- The Astara 01 Concept cars will once again use e-fuel, thanks to which near all their emissions will be neutral.
OBJECTIVE: PARTICIPATE IN THE DAKAR WITH A NEUTRAL CARBON FOOTPRINT
The measurement carried out by the team in 2022 affected scopes 1 and 2. This year, as a novelty and as a commitment to continue improving care for the environment, Astara will include scope 3. Therefore, to measure the carbon footprint generated during the Dakar will take into account the aforementioned routes of the competition team.
At the end of the rally, a detailed report of the Astara Team 's carbon footprint will be produced, and the result will be more than offset, just as it was last year. To this end, Astara will collaborate with different projects to offset emissions to neutralize them and thus achieve its goal of participating in the Dakar with a zero-carbon footprint.

January 2, 2023 . The participation of the mobility company Astara in the Dakar rally began a year ago with the firm objective of demonstrating that technological excellence and competition at the highest level are fully compatible, respecting the environment and diversity. The Astara Team, with its Astara 01 Concept car, reached its first goal last January, after the Dakar 2022, with its commitment fulfilled: it became the most sustainable team in the rally.
A year later, the innovative company faces its second Dakar with a very powerful team, including Laia Sanz, Carlos Checa and Óscar Fuertes at the wheel, a trio with serious possibilities of playing a great role both competitively and in their main objectives: the caring for the environment and the relevance of people and teamwork. Three drivers, three co-drivers, three cars, eight support vehicles and a team of more than 30 people fight from Saudi Arabia to be even more sustainable in this Dakar 2023. How are they going to achieve it?
ASTARA TEAM, AN EXAMPLE OF SUSTAINABILITY
In 2022 they already proved to be the most sustainable team on the Dakar. Now, they set the bar much higher, competing at the highest level with minimal environmental impact, avoiding the waste of resources in each process and with the best possible solution in terms of performance and environmental protection.
Once again, the Astara Team is committed to a light vehicle powered by e-fuel in 2023, the Astara 01 Concept, an evolution of last year's model, and which is demonstrating its ability to compete at the highest level in a sustainable way using this ecological fuel and hydrogen-based synthetic.
To demonstrate this and reaffirm its commitment, the global mobility company will again measure and audit the carbon footprint generated by the team during the 2023 Dakar rally. Its race cars will once again use this e-fuel, so practically all its emissions they will be neutral.
In addition, Astara will consider this year the air travel of personnel and the transport of vehicles by boat to Saudi Arabia (so-called indirect emissions), and not only the emissions in competition.
This reporting is carried out according to standardized measurement protocols, in this case, the GHG Protocol global standard, since it is the most widespread method and the one that has served as the basis for developing the ISO 14064 standard. In both cases they will be reviewed and certified by a prestigious independent entity such as AENOR.
HOW THE CARBON FOOTPRINT IS MEASURED
The carbon footprint of an organization is the totality of greenhouse gases (GHG) emitted both directly and indirectly through the activity carried out by said organization, in this case the Astara Team in a sporting event such as the Dakar.
The value obtained is the result of multiplying the consumption data of each emission source by its corresponding emission factor (according to the protocol used), for example, in the case of team vehicles, fuel consumption is used in liters.
The GHG Protocol establishes three possible scopes when measuring the carbon footprint:
Scope 1: direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are measured, which are, among others, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxides, CFCs or chlorofluorocarbons and ozone. For example, the emissions that come from the combustion of boilers, ovens, vehicles... and that are owned by the organization or are controlled by said entity in question are included. It also includes fugitive emissions (air conditioning leaks, methane leaks from pipes…). In the case of the Astara TEAM, the consumption of the race cars and the rest of the vehicles used by the team will be measured, as well as the fugitive emissions that may originate from leaks of different components of the cars. Scope 2: indirect GHG emissions associated with the generation of electricity purchased and consumed by the organization are taken into account. In this case, the value in the Astara Team is zero because it does not contract electricity to third parties. Scope 3: measures other indirect emissions. Some examples of activities of this scope are the extraction and production of materials that the organization acquires, work trips through external means, the transport of raw materials, fuels, and products (for example, logistics activities) carried out by third parties or use of products or services offered by others.
